Who pays for home care?

Multiple ways care can be covered

Most families use Medicare, Medicaid, or a managed care plan. We’ll help confirm what applies before services start.

  • Medicare

May pay for covered services for eligible homebound patients under physician orders.

  • Private insurance

Most private plans include some home care coverage — network and benefits vary by plan.

  • Co-pay / share of cost

In some cases the patient or client is responsible for a co-pay or remaining balance.

  • Private pay & workers’ comp

Private duty payment and workers’ compensation may cover services in certain cases.

Medicare eligibility (overview)

When Medicare may cover home health

If a patient has an exacerbation of a pre-existing condition, acute onset of a new diagnosis, or new medication, home health services may be covered when eligibility requirements are met.

May be covered 100% by Medicare when requirements are met

  1. Skilled care need

Intermittent skilled nursing or therapy that is medically necessary and under physician/therapist supervision.

  2. Homebound

Patient is homebound due to illness or injury and leaving home requires considerable effort.

  3. Physician orders

Under the care of a physician who provides written orders for the home health plan.

  4. Certified agency

Services provided by a Medicare-certified home health agency such as States Health.

  5. Care at home

Care received in the place of residence — not in a hospital or nursing home setting.
